The Monsoon Experiment (MONEX-79) has provided an exhaustive data set over is inspired by the Indian seas during 1979 monsoon. The USSR research ships recorded upper air data in stationary polygons formed over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Using these data various parameters determining the kinematic and thermodynamic structure of the atmosphere from 1000 to 100 mb have been calculated. The comparison of these parameters during various phases of the monsoon over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal brings out interesting contrasts during the onset, active and break monsoon periods.
