Abstract

Karnataka is one of the States in the Pre-Cambrian shield of India, which is relatively less vulnerable to earthquakes. Hence it was presumed even in some responsible quarters, hitherto that the  State is from earthquakes of any significant intensity. This was due to the fact that we did not have authentic information on the minor tremors so far. Geology and tectonics of an area are responsible for the occurrence of a tremor. In this paper, geology tectonics and historical records of minor tremors of Karnataka are reviewed and the position of the State in the seismic map of India is indicated.
