Abstract

Mean monthly winds in the 7-37 km range for the months, of September to May through December, based on 155 balloon ascents made over the period 1957-00 in the latitude belt 17*-10QN in India, are reported. It is shown that except for few short periods during winter and spring, when weak westerlies prevailed, the stratospheric circulation was predominantly zonal with winds generally increasing with altitude.
