Radar observations on the formation of cumulus clouds near Calcutta during the monsoon season of 1958 have been presented. RHI data on 83 individual cloud cells have been analysed and their rates of growth and decay calculated. It has been suggested that the condensation-coalescence process is responsible for the initiation of precipitation in convective clouds during monsoon season near Calcutta.
