Abstract

The areal distribution of radar precipitation echoes at Madras is presented seasonwise. A comparative study of echo distribution as related to normal rainfall pattern is given. The diurnal variation of the echoes and their development during different periods of a day over land and sea areas and also the monthly distribution of heights of echo tops are discussed. It is seen that the areal echo distribution and the normal rainfall pattern agree each other to a great extent and that there is a complete reversal of diurnal variation of echoes only over sea but not on land area from northeast monsoon to southwest monsoon and that the total echo frequency over land area is more than that over sea area in southwest monsoon season and vice-versa in northeast monsoon season.
