A note on the hot days of Madras (1875-1963)

Abstract

The incidence of heat waves over the city of Madras during the summer months March to June for the period 1875-1963 has been studied in this note. Delay in the onset of sea breeze by 2 to 3 hours, advective transfer of hot continental air from the Deccan plateau and warming by adiabatic descent of the prevailing northwesterly or westerly winds down the sloping terrain are shown to be the principal factors contributing to the occurrence of such hot spells over Madras.
