Abstract

Study of heavy rainfall which occurred during the period 1961.67 in Ganga Barage catchment area has been made with a view to predict rainfall from synoptic considerations. The various synoptic situations that cause spells of heavy rainfall are broadly defined under four 'types' and the association of each type with quantitative distribution of rainfall over the concerned area has been examined from synoptic view-point.  The study has revealed the possibility of rainfall prediction quantitatively in the area on the successive two to three days, once the synoptic situation is identified.
